Debt Matters: El Nino and household debts in Amhara and Tigray Regions

This new field research in Amhara and Tigray regions looks at substantial increases in debts in rural households, as one of the continuing impacts of drought in 2015. The study examines debts in households covered by the Productive Safety Net Programme and those receiving emergency assistance. Not only were debts rising, but the use of loans had shifted away from productive uses to support agriculture to direct food purchases.
